Is Online Shopping Really Safe?

Many people have questions about the security of online shopping. That’s understandable. For a lot of folks, online shopping represents a whole new way to have their personal information stolen. However, I argue the point that shopping online can be safer than shopping in your local mall. In this article, I’ll explain why.

Do you ever feel like the lines between the virtual cyber world and the real world are colliding? Same here. Trust me, you’re not alone. Many people are recognizing that the internet is infiltrating (in good ways and bad) every part of our society. The internet is in our homes, at the local coffee shops, and traveling through the very air we breathe – waiting for a cell phone to pick up the signal. Internet connectivity permeates every area our nation. It’s time we do a little research and figure out if shopping online can be as safe or safer than physically walking into a store.

The Online Nature of Modern Retail

Without realizing it, many people are shopping electronically when they hit the malls. For example, using a debit or credit card at the point of sale means a certain amount of your information is being transmitted electronically. In fact, many modern point of sale computers contain personal information in an account built just for you. This helps retailers offer special deals, see your purchase history, and know more about you so that they can zero in on exactly what you might want to buy next.

Don’t believe it? Think about all the membership cards that merchants will try to throw your way. How many do you have in your wallet? They promise discounts, but many have intentions to track your purchase habits. Membership cards and personal accounts aren’t a bad thing, the purpose here is to show you that your personal information is already out there . . . whether you are shopping online or not.

Shopping Online Safer?

Now let’s compare shopping online with shopping in a retail store. First, there’s the obvious benefit of not risking a car accident on the way to the mall. The less you drive, the safer you become. Of course, everybody has to get out and about, but cutting your driving time cuts your risk . . . not to mention your fuel expenses. This might not be the strongest point, but it is a point!

Shopping online is also safer because less people will have access to your debit or credit card. Corrupt storefront employees utilize all kinds of tactics to steal your personal information. They can use a device to swipe information off of your card when you’re not looking. Although this is extremely rare, it DOES happen! You must make sure you are making secure payments.

The Challenge

That’s why I challenge you today to rethink security when it comes to shopping – online or not. Follow these tips to help you keep your personal information safe:

  • Be aware of your surroundings when you are shopping at the store. Where is your wallet? Would you know if it slipped out of your pocket?
  • Shop securely online. When you’re shopping online, remember that eBillme is the safest way to purchase your items. Sure, you could always use your debit card, but do you get the same security and cash back rewards that eBillme provides?
  • Be aware of your current financial situation. Check your bank statements often and be sure to address any discrepancies right away.

How About You?

What are your feelings about shopping online? How do you shop safe online? Would you recommend it to friends and family? We want to hear from you! Leave a comment on the eBillme blog and let us know your thoughts. Is there anything eBillme can do to better educate customers about the security of online shopping?
