isPermaLink="false">http://www.ebillme.com/blog/?p=4698

Ten grand. That's a lot of money. How would you spend it?

Thought provoking, isn’t it? If you had an extra $10,000 given to you, what would you do with it? Would you spend it, save it, gift it, or invest it? What would you do with ten grand?

7 Serious Questions

By now, your mind is probably spinning thinking of exactly what you would do with it. Capture those thoughts, write them down, and then ask yourself these additional questions:

Do you have an emergency fund yet?

Are you out of debt?

Do you have a life-changing event coming up such as a birth or job transition?

Have you put off any costly medical procedures such as braces or surgeries?

Have you been planning on going back to college?

Is your 401(k) funded at least up to the match; how about funding for your other retirement investments?

Do your kids have their education funded?

These are just a few questions to get your gears turning. Now compare your previous thoughts with your answers from this list. Are there conflicts between the two? Most people, including myself, would be tempted to do something with ten grand that they ought not. What are some bigger, more important priorities?

What’s Important?

Determining where to put your money, whether or not it’s $10,000, can be difficult. I’ve known some people to keep a large sum of money in their savings account (for emergencies) when they have the same amount or more in debt. When you ask them if they would take out a loan to gain an emergency fund, they say “of course not!” What’s the difference? This type of reverse questioning can work for many financial questions, and show you what you should actually do with your money.

I’m convinced that the only way to get yourself to do what’s important is to want what’s important. If you don’t care, you’ll never progress. This principle spills over into many areas in life whether it’s diet, exercise, finances, relationships, etc. It’s a universal truth.

Build A Foundation First

When people are trying to decide how to spend their money, several variables come into play. However, the most pervasive and unfortunate variable is that of emotion. When you’re making an emotional purchase, you’ll spend more than you intend. Try the 30-day rule! If you find an item you’d like to purchase, wait 30 days and see if you still want the item. If you do, go ahead and buy it! This will help you filter out all of those impulsive purchases that can cause you to spend more than you’d like.

If you were to acquire a large sum of money, ask yourself if you have built a strong financial foundation before you spend it. If you haven’t be sure to focus on your emergency fund or debts first. Even small amounts of money should be dedicated to financial essentials before you begin investing.

Spend Securely

When you do decide that it’s time to spend some money, shop safe online with the eBillme payment option. You’ll have greater peace of mind when you shop online knowing that your personal information is not being leaked to any extent.

When you’re spending at the local store, be sure to use safe practices such as never allowing your debit card out of your sight. Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t become a victim. To learn more about ways to protect your transactions, read our article on identity theft.

So, what would you do with $10,000? Would you spend it wisely? Store it for a rainy day? Or maybe give it away? Let’s hear your plans for the future and how you anticipate you would spend the money.

Special offer on Amazon.com Gift Cards

Deals & Discounts

Amazon.com Gift cards

cash back rewards

gift cards

Online Banking

rebate

shop online
<guid

These are tips that you can start…

There are plenty of ways to save money over time and that’s great, but don’t you want to be able to save money NOW? Well here are 5 ways to save money fast. These are tips that you can start using now, and save money right away.

1. Get Cash Back when you Shop Online

If you haven’t checked it out yet, eBillme has a Cash Back Rewards Program that’s really easy to use! Here’s how it works: you shop online and use eBillme when you checkout. Sign up for the Rewards Program, and everytime you shop you earn 1%. Once you reach $10 you can start cashing in on your savings. It’s like making money without having to do anything (but shop)!

2. Take advantage of discounts and deals. Black Friday is coming up at the end of the month. It’s a perfect time to get as much Christmas Shopping done that you can. You won’t believe how much money you can save by waking up early and using the “Door Ringer” discounts at your local mall on Black Friday!

3. Spend less when you shop for groceries by doing a few simple things. First, eat before you head to the grocery store and bring a detailed list. That way you will only buy the things on that list instead of everything that looks tasty for lunch. Also, buy from the bottom or lower shelves. It’s a great sales strategy that stores use by placing items at eye-level because shoppers typically shop at eye-level. Which means the less expensive items are at the bottom.

4. Check online for big items you might need to purchase. Many times, you can get better deals when you buy online than if you buy in the store. Most online stores, like CSN Stores, will also give you Free Shipping on high priced items. Remember, the Monday after Thanksgiving, is Cyber Monday, take advantage of that by shopping online!

5. Clip those Coupons! I know it seems tedious to do, but if you know what you’re shopping for it’s easy to take a quick look through the newspaper and find great coupons to take with you to the store. One way to keep from having to hold up the line while you pull them all out is to divide them up by store and keep all the coupons for each store together with a paperclip.

I hope these tips help you start saving money right away! I’d love to hear your tips on how you save money. If you have a great tip be sure to leave it in a comment below and help out the rest of our readers!

Remembering a Particularly Black Friday

Shopping Tips

Black Friday Deals

coupon codes

shop online

Do you remember Jdimytai Damour? Likely not, but it would be worthwhile to remember his name the next time you walk through the front entrance of a Wal Mart because Jdimytai Damour, a 34 year old employee died there–trampled to death on November 28th 2008 by shoppers eager to grab Black Friday deals.

Outside the store in Valley Stream, NY a crowd began amassing at 9:00 pm the previous night. The police were called at 3:30 am to deal with the large and unruly crowd. At 4:55 am the crowd of 2000 shoppers pushed the doors off their hinges and flooded into the store. At 6:03 am, at the nearby Franklin Hospital, Jdimytai Damour was pronounced dead: a result of the injuries he received when he fell under the feet of the shoppers pushing their way into the store.

A quote from the New York Times describes the frenzied shoppers who continued to move determinedly into the store, even as the police tried to resuscitate Mr. Damour:

People did not stop to help the employee as he lay on the ground, and they pushed against other Wal-Mart workers who were trying to aid Mr. Damour. The crowd kept running into the store even after the police arrived, jostling and pushing officers who were trying to perform CPR, the police said.

“They were like a stampede,” said Nassau Det. Lt. Michael Fleming. “Hundreds of people walked past him, over him or around him.”

The case for limiting our human interactions grows stronger and stronger with each and every act like this. We all want to save money in these difficult financial times, but how far are we really willing to go?

If you plan on going out to the mortar and brick shopping malls this Black Friday, here are some tips to keep you safe. Above all, this Black Friday try to remember that we’re all in this together: the reason why 2000 people gathered outside a Wal Mart wasn’t to trample someone to death, but to save a little money on something they normally wouldn’t be able to afford. Is that wrong?

Should there be more regulations surrounding Black Friday shopping? Should there be a governing body that limits the retailers, and holds them responsible for their customers’ safety?

It seems senseless to show up in person when you can find good deals from reputable dealers online easily, like the more than 800 who offer eBillme at their checkout. In many cases you will save more online than in-store due to the ease with which you can find <a
