A Vancouver resident was charged with creating an international credit card scam, in addition to interfering with a police investigation, according to CBC News. Kamyar Jahanrakhshan was first arrested in 2009 after leading police on a high-speed boat chase, and is now facing 113 separate charges.
Of those offenses, 90 of them are related to credit card
fraud.. According to authorities, Jahanrakhshan made fake credit cards and used them to shop at a Lower Mainland luxury car dealership. He purchased several high-end cards, including Cadillacs and BMWs, as well as a boat worth $140,000, the news source reports.
"There was an allegation that hundreds of thousands of dollars in vehicles...had been purchased using multiple fradulent credit cards usually involving information from banks overseas," said Constable Mike McLaughlin.
After a recent search of his apartment, Jahanrakhshan was slapped with 21 more charges including obstructing justice, possession of stolen property, and using a stolen credit card, according to the news provider.
The best way to avoid identity theft is to stop using plastic when making purchases. Using a secure payment method when shopping online is a good way to keep personal information safe.
