BBB: Be wary of Halloween retailers

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has released a warning concerning Halloween retailers. Some temporary websites and seasonal retailers that offer Halloween costumes. and supplies may not be trustworthy.

"It may seem like you're getting a great deal by shopping online or last minute, but it's important for consumers to research the company and its shipping and return policies before placing and order," said BBB president and CEO Steve J. Bernas. "Otherwise, you could find yourself without a costume or unable to return one that you didn't want."

Customers have researched costume and theatrical shops through the BBB more than 1,250 times in the past year alone, a 59 percent increase in research compared to last year. They have also been filing complains.

One woman, Lisa Curtin of Arlington Heights, Illinois, told the BBB that she ordered a large costume the week before Halloween, and received an extra small. She returned the costume, but the retailer refused to give her credit, and she was even laughed at by the customer service representative.

There are many ways consumers can protect themselves when shopping online. SafeShopping.org recommends using complicated passwords and thoroughly researching all websites. Some may choose to use a secure payment service when online.
