How can I protect a family member from credit card fraud?

line2

Online fraudsters are counting on the average population to be naive when it comes to using the Internet. Unfortunately in this case, one of the most vulnerable segments of the population is the elderly. To protect their finances and peace of mind, there are a few things you can do to help elderly family members and friends:

  • Find a “Computer for Seniors” course where they can become familiar with computer terminology.
  • Help them set up a junk-mail filter in their email account to avoid phishing emails that could lead to credit card fraud.
  • Talk to them about the realities of Internet fraud to make them aware of the pitfalls.
  • Make sure their computer is set up with a firewall and virus protection.
  • Show them how to make online purchases using alternative payment options which do not involve using their credit card numbers online.

The AARP provides tips and suggestion to help prevent seniors from becoming the victims of online fraud. The FBI’s Tips and Suggestions Site is specifically directed at protecting seniors from fraudsters.
