Banks, credit unions and financial institutions spend a great deal of time and money to ensure your safety while banking online. That being said, fraudsters can also spend a lot of time and money trying to hack into these systems.
Online banking is considered safe, but you should take steps to protect yourself from fraudsters who may be trying to steal your identity while you’re banking online.
To protect yourself from identity theft:
- Install anti-virus software
- Learn how to spot a phishing email and what to do if you get one
- Only navigate directly to your online banking web site (don’t follow links to it)
- Protect your online banking login information (don’t share your PINs or passwords with anyone!)
- Be sure to log off the online banking web site when you’re finished
